  1. Significance of internship
    • Introduce internship

Báo Cáo Thực Tập Tại Trung Tâm Ngọai Ngữ H123 English the term “service-learning” means a method under which students or participants learn and develop through active participation in thoughtfully organized service that is conducted in and meets the needs of a community; is coordinated with an elementary school, secondary school, institution of higher education, or community service program, and with the community; and helps foster civic responsibility. Moreover, service-learning is integrated into and enhances the academic curriculum of the students, or the educational components of the community service program in which the participants are enrolled; and provides structured time for the students or participants to reflect on the service experience.

Service learning involves students in service projects to apply classroom learning for local agencies that exist to effect positive change in the community. Service learning is a behavior in which students work in collaboration with others, achieve the true goals of the community, aim for a deeper understanding, reflect on their experiences, and apply what they have learned to community issues. It is a form of experiential education in which learning is conducted through a cycle of reflection. Service learning requires students to use knowledge and skills to meet the needs of the real community. It differs from community services in that selected activities are integrated into the school’s academic curriculum and content, allowing students to reflect on their service experience upon completion.

Unless students have the opportunity to practice in real life, confident English skills are not enough to succeed. For this reason, internships play an important role in moving theory into concrete situations. Through the internship, I met new friends from other universities, observed their attitudes and requirements in learning English, and applied appropriate teaching strategies and methods to each subject.

  • Specific mission

In this internship, I was assigned to communicate with foreign teacher when he attends to the Company, help him to manage the class when students study in classroom or during an outdoor activity, and interpreting his ideas to the student if necessary. Every week, my duty is to help students catch up with the lesson in class by checking their vocabulary’s comprehension, design exercises and ask them to do a review of the previous lesson and teach a new lesson if possible. During the lecture, teacher and me co-ordinate to demonstrate the meaning of new lesson and make sure students can be able to understand through examples. Furthermore, I am responsible for checking and giving comments on homework. At the end of class, I give stickers for the best one in order to encourage their studying spirit. Sometimes, I also help others teachers to mark student exam papers (midterm test and final test). Besides teaching time, I also had opportunity to be an office staff. From there, I equipped myself with new skills pertaining to office jobs like photocopying, delivering fliers, sticking and cutting paper, doing actual surveys for the Company, using computers to create and design book cover, bookbinding, office documentation, how to socialize and cooperate with different people in a polite and effective matter. Although those look simple, they also gave us difficulties when facing to the real life.

Báo Cáo Thực Tập Tại Trung Tâm Ngọai Ngữ H123 English the goal of service learning is to direct the learners into practical environment where the primary motivation is service.

At the end of the internship, I had the privilege to be a classroom teacher, which gave me many practical lessons such as how to deal with defiant pupils, how to wake up a tired atmosphere and how to reconcile when students quarrel with each other.

When I started the internship, I was seriously nervous about everythings that it is hard for children to listen to my words. I found it difficult that they would cry in class or hit each other. I have never been in those cases before.

After this internship, I am looking forward to getting new experiences and improving my communication with encounters skills. Especially, I can apply the theory that I learned at school into reality.

CHAPTER II. REFLECTIVE WRITING

A month ago, before I started my internship officially, I went to H123 English After School center to ask their permission to accept me to work as an intern here. I had an opportunity to meet with the head of the guide department of the company, the direct advisor, visiting around the company and observing how employees are working. She is very social with everybody in the company. In this period, I got an opportunity to work with the supervisor. She presented the foundation of the company to me and we talked about what day and what time I can go to the company to work as an intern, which is valuable for me to be comfortable with the mechanism of work and system here. The company has planned an internship schedule, which is helpful for me. Based on the schedule, this week I needed to do many tasks like learning about the culture of the company, setting up the materials for taking note of messages from the clients.

DAY 1 (February 14th 2022)

I went to the center in the morning, it was the first time I went to H123 center as an intern. Ms. Tram showed me the position that I would work for the whole internship. She guided me the basis knowledge to become a teacher assistant. I had to be extremely concentrated on what she said so as to not miss any significant information. However, I wasn’t allowed to work as an assistant. Ms. Tram guided me to do the office jobs at first. There was a problem that I had met in this first week. There were many skills that I haven’t learnt yet and I needed to inquire many new skills such as sorting and handing out documents, filling, records keeping, and it made me feel exhausted. Fortunately, with the encourage from the advisor I felt better and I realized that I had to try more and more to achieve success. After a whole guiding time, I was given some documents about the center to read and type some information.

DAY 2 (February 15th 2022)

I came to the company early to prepare for my job. I practiced the skills that I was guided yesterday. So that I could have a good performance while I was working. When my supervisor came, she asked me to talked about the skills which she told me and she was surprised that I could remember most of them although there still was some mistake. Fortunately, on this day, there is an English class and I was given a chance to observe. I learnt and took note some methods to control the class and how to deal with the problems that happened. After observing, Ms. Tram told me what an assistant need to do such as manage the children, check the students’ homeworks, or sometime there is foreign teachers and I need to convey the teacher’s requirements to students.

DAY 3 (February 16th 2022)

This day, there is no class on my schedule, then I continued typing documents and translated them. When I finished preparing the documents, I was guided on how to use the photocopier to photocopy the documents for customer. Suddenly, when I photocopied the machine was stopped working, I didn’t know why and I felt really worried. I didn’t know if it was my mistake or not. I asked for help from Ms. Tram and fortunately the machine was still working. It had been stopped working because there weren’t any paper in it, so it was unable to print any things. I could acquire a study that I would be better if I checked around the machine before annoying another person.

DAY 4 (February 17th 2022)

Báo Cáo Thực Tập Tại Trung Tâm Ngọai Ngữ H123 English on this day, I was given a chance to work as a teacher assistant for the first time of my internship, I was so excited to meet children in the class 1 and also a little bit nervous. I will be in charge of the class with the main teacher – Mrs. Lyn. I came to class and completed my work as what Ms. Tram had told me before. I spent some minutes introducing myself and got along with the children, then I helped my students review the old lesson. During the class, I supported checking homeworks then demonstrating and translating new words from the lesson. Because that was the first day of mine in the class, the students were not pay attention for what I said sometimes. When Mrs. Lyn went out for a minute, they started to yelling at each other. It was difficult for me to keep them be quiet. At the end of class, I felt a little bit tired.

DAY 5 (February 18th 2022)

On Friday, I continued typing the documents and photocopying the materials that Ms. Tram required. While I was working, Ms. Tram asked me if I knew how to work with data in Microsoft Excel. At that moment, I was very proud that I had a little knowledge on Excel when I studied information technology at university. Then Ms. Tram talked through about the tasks, and I was asked to finished it before the end of the day. I tried my best to finish the task as soon as possible. However, due to not being careful, I forgot to fill data in a sheet. Luckily, Ms. Tram didn’t yell at me but I felt very shame because of my careless. I learnt a lesson that I had to be not only fast but also careful whenever did something.

DAY 6 (February 19th 2022)

On this day, I went to class 1 about 10 minutes early, waited for the students to come to class, and greeted me. I helped Mrs. Lyn to arrange the table. Like the day before, I checked my homework, demonstrated new words, and translated them. They learned how to greet others by waving, laughing, and greeting. I helped Mrs. Lyn to translate what she wanted the students to do. After that, we gave them time to practice greeting each other. This time I tried side by side with them, fortunately they started listening to me. For those who were good at training, I gave these kids stickers. So everyone was working hard to get the stickers and realized that later classes could use this method.

DAY 7 (February 22th 2022)

Class 1 – After two days working together, the students seemed to get closer to me. When they saw me, they tried to make me pay attention to them by saying “Hello Mr. Quoc! Hello! Hi!”. These students as a spirit for me to work more effectively. However, I had to keep them from making noise. Then I started doing my normal jobs, reviewed the old lessons of the topic “Greeting”, made sure that the students remembered the previous lesson. This class was a well-behaved students class, but there was a student in the class who kept yelling – Hung, he was always against me. I felt fully streesed. I had to threaten him by removing the candies that I gave him before. After a period of convincing, I still need help from Ms. Tram. This case gave me more experience in solving problems related to children who were not listened to the teacher.

DAY 8 (February 24th 2022)

All of students started to co-ordinate with me, they were doing well behave  and listened to me more often. I felt really good helping them in studying, playing small games and giving them stickers. I did the same works with the previous day, reviewed old lesson of “Colour” and ensured that they understand and remember all of the words of the lesson. After that, I supported teachers to manage students to observe their participation in-class activities, support when students have questions about the lesson. I used all of my power for this day.

DAY 9 (February 26th 2022)

On this day, I came to work as normal. Suddenly, I heard that Mrs. Lyn was busy and unabled to come to the center. Then Ms. Tram asked me to look after the children. I was really nervous, because I didn’t prepare anythings, and I didn’t know if I could control the class by myself. However, I had to reassure myself and tried my best to take over the class. I came to class without Mrs. Lyn, the children started to ask about Mrs. Lyn, then I helped them to review the old lesson. At first, they were quiet obedient however for a few minutes later they started to talk loudly and they seemed not to listen to me. Fortunately, there was a Vietnamese teacher – Mr. Bao, he was going to be temporary in charge of class. He has taught here for about 4 years. At the end of this class, I could earn more experience from Mr. Bao about classroom management.

DAY 10 (March 1st 2022)

Báo Cáo Thực Tập Tại Trung Tâm Ngọai Ngữ H123 English on this day, I was assigned the job of grade 5 and it was hard to get along with students. They didn’t pay attention to what I said in the class. That was the time when I realized these kids were harder to teach than my previous class. Most of the students really got annoy in the class although they were the smart kids. I seemed to become lose control and then I shouted at the students. That was terrible action that I had ever done, I counldn’t believe that I did it. Mrs. Lyn warned me about my action. She told me to keep patient in any situations. It was my lucky when there was not thing serious. At that time, I really admired for teachers who can handle for such kids like them. After all, they only stayed quiet when Mrs. Lyn spoke up and started listen to him. At the end of the class, I felt like a phone that runs out of battery, it was really tired attending the class of these kids.

DAY 11 (March 3rd 2022)

A new working day with class 5 again. And today, Mrs. Lyn was busy again. However, I felt confident cause of the knowledge I learnt from the previous class. I was hoping that their positive learning attitude was maintained but not as I expected. Some problems have occurred, two of the students in the class had a heated argument. They didn’t care about anyone who interfered with them. The problem was not so serious as they did. Providing advice and reconciliation were all I have done to be good for them. When the conflict happens the things I want to accomplish later seem much more difficult, then I had to give them solution for the argument. After that, I still continued my lesson, gave some practice review exercises for students. I changed the classroom atmosphere with some games for them to remember the lesson more.

DAY 12 (March 5th 2022)

On this day, I received an announcement that Ms. Tram would come to observe my performance. I was so stressful when heard that. I was confused and did not focus on my work. I thought I got some mistakes and she was not satisfied to my performance. However, I tried to calm down as possible as I can so as to help children complete their lesson. I did all my best and as a result, at the end of class, Ms. Tram felt satisfied about my performance, and she said she could give me a chance to take a class. However, I needed to have a demo class.

DAY 13 (March 8th 2022)

On this day, I felt my self wasn’t confident enough so that I still went to some other teacher’s classes to acquired more experince. I came to Mr. Bao class. He was teaching grade 5. He invinted me to come in and helped him to watch out the children while they were doing the test. That was their mid – term test to see if students could understand or remember what they had learnt. The class was really quiet. I admired him for being so well on managing classroom. He gave me some advice on how to deal with naught students. I took note all what he said.

DAY 14 (March 10th 2022)

On this day, I continued to observing Mr. Bao class to learn the way he imparted knowledge to students. Because they took the test the previous day. So, I helped Mr. Bao to mark the tests. I was surprised by the results. There was over a half of the class achieve 7 score. Only 3 students got average score. After finishing the work, I paid attention to Mr. Bao’s teaching. I was attracted by his teaching style. I had learnt many things from him, and I belived I could apply them to my next class.

DAY 15 (March 12th 2022)

On this day, I came back to class 5 with Mrs. Lyn. The lesson today was about pronunciation. There were some students got trouble in pronouncing letters H, I, J, so they need to practice many times. Mrs. Lyn taught them very passionately. It was really hard for Tuan to pronounce exactly. Tuan is a good student but not really excellent like others. He could not pay attention on lecture or remember new words in a short time. I thought I should pay more attention helping him to improve her knowledge.

DAY 16 (March 15th 2022)

On this day, I was going to take a demo class. I was extremely nervous because I had never done it before. I didn’t know if I could finish the teaching with a great performance or there was any mistake happened during the teaching time. I came to the center 20 minutes early, I watched through the lesson again and found an empty room to practice myself first. Suddenly, Ms. Tram went through and she saw me. She gave me some advice and encourage my spirit. Time was coming, I went in the room where Ms. Tram was waiting for, and I saw Mr. Bao there, too. I tried to calm down as possible as I can so as to complete my lesson. After all, I finished my lesson and recived many compliment on my performance although there was some mistake. And I was very glad to be announced that I could take a class on next day.

DAY 17 (March 17th 2022)

On this day, I was really enthusiastic and nervous at the same time when I was going to be in charge for a class. I came to center 10 minutes early, because of having a good demo class in the previous day, I felt a little bit confident, and wasn’t anxious anymore. Finally, students arrived, they were all new to me. My class had ten students in Grade 3. In this day, my duty was to review the vocabularies about food for them so I had designed my lesson plan carefully in order to go to the class in confidence. In my lesson plan, I designed many activities and game in order to check student’s comprehension about the vocabularies as well as let them feel more comfortable in remembering the word and easy to do the listening task. Generally, my lesson completed in success because I saw that the students were very interesting in my activities. Moreover, the anticipated problems that I had imaged before I taught help me a lot in controlling the class.

DAY 18 (March 19th 2022)

On this day, I continued teaching the Class 3. I reviewed the lesson which they learnt in previous class and checked the homework. After that, to make sure students could remember the words that I taught. I gave students games to check and help them with their memorization skills and pronunciation. Everthing was fine until there was a student with hyperactivity. He screamed in class and annoyed other students, he didn’t want to play the game. Then, based on the experience I leanrt from Mrs. Lyn, I tried to encourage him to be an examiner to score the winner group. He slowly calmed down and enjoyed the moment being an examiner.

DAY 19 (March 22th 2022)

On this day, I continued working with my Class 3. We started with pronunciation reviewing, vocabulary writing, word guessing games and doing extra exercises. They were all excited about the games. Nothing special happened, but the good thing is no one tried to bother others. Through this internship, I found some good things I achieved during this time: good lesson planning preparation, good lesson management, assertive teaching, and attention to time management. However, there were some areas that I needed to improve. First, I needed to clearly introduce the rules of the game. Second, I needed to invite a diverse group of students, rather than just focusing on the best students in the class.

DAY 20 (March 24th 2022)

I was quite excited and surprised when all the students started getting familiar with to me. However, when they got used to with me, they became stubborn. The purpose of this lesson was one could be able to communicate with the other the same as the conversation in the books. It was not simple at all because these students were not very focused and argued with each other about unrelated issues. It would take my time if this maintained to happen. I needed to remind them many times. However, they did not pay attention to me. Everything turned into better after they had been supervised through Ms. Tram. Sometimes being gentle wasn’t always the proper way. I turned into strict with them and of path now no longer a whole lot effective. I reminded myself that problems were temporary, I actually had and could retain to conquere the ones barriers through concentrating and enhancing what I can examine for the duration of this internship.

DAY 21 (March 25th 2022)

On this day, I didn’t have schedule for teaching. So I came to the center to see Ms. Tram if she needed any help. I was asked to type documents and suddenly there was a foreigner came to the center. Ms. Tram asked me to talk with that man to ask if he needed any help. I was excited to talking with that man because this was time for me to practice my English. After a short conversation, I realized he came to the center for an interview as a teacher. Then, I guided him to the department that is in charge of foreign teachers. I was really happy that I was be able to apply what I learnt at school to the work. After that, I came back to finish the task which Ms. Tram gave me.

DAY 22 (March 26th 2022)

Even though it was the last day, I did not neglect my mission. I continued giving students a review of 3th grade English vocabulary and grammar. I thought that they knew this was the last lesson that I taught them so they became more obedient, naughty students also became obedient, too. I was very happy that I had the opportunity to study and work here, and also receive credibility. We had a memorable time together, I thought I would come back here after I finished the Service Learning report and become an official teacher of H123 English Afterschool Center. At the end of the class, I went to say goodbye to all the teachers and the staff in the center, took a photo together and I promised that I would be back soon to work with them again. What an unforgettable memory!

CHAPTER III. CONCLUSION

After a month of internship at H123 center, I got a lot valuable working experience and soft skills. In my point of view, these precious experiences will help me a lot for my work career in future. Morover, during this service-learning course, I realized my strengths and drawbacks through the teaching assistant position. There are many things I need to change in order to help me enhance my English in the future.

Fortunately, this internship I had many very supportive benefits. Firstly, there was a real environment for practicing educational theory. At the same time, the knowledge gained at the university is actually very useful. Secondly, the friendly work environment made my work more comfortable. My colleague has always helped me in detail when needed. Thirdly, thanks to the support of enthusiastic students, we were able to successfully complete the training. Fourthly, the considerable material facilities and furniture such as projectors, suitable room size, student chairs helped me a lot during class. Last but not least, the internship gave me a lot of useful experience that will be useful in the future.

On the other hand, there were some disadvantages that had to be eliminated in the internship. On the first day, I felt like an outsider because of my shyness. Also, due to the limited internship period, I could not follow the student’s results until the midterm exam. Also, I was sometimes  passive to manage classes for naughty students. After all, I sometimes couldn’t handle the feelings of a rebellious student.

Overall, the internship helps me to enhance my social interaction skills and handle every challenges with confidence and optimism. Although a month of the internship has passed, I have gained valuable and necessary experience for my future job when have been worked in a real environment. Through this internship, I think that the needed thing to do is to keep trying to learn and cultivate more knowledge for myself.  I feel grown – up with experience in communications, skills to solve difficulties. I always had written recorded carefully as “fund of knowledge” by myself.

CHAPTER IV. RECOMMENDATIONS

Thanks to this internship, I’ve gained skills and experience. And, I also have some suggestions in the hope that teaching and learning in Thu Dau Mot University become more effectively and successful.

Firstly, after a month of internship, I have some points that need to improve: The first point is that I need to continue to learn, draw experiences for myself and limit my weaknesses. Secondly, study and improve professional skills, practicing ethical behavior in order to become an exemplary teacher. Thirdly, continue to learn and improve my knowledge as assiduous as possible.

Secondly, the announcement should be done more times and more clearly. It was a little bit not convenient for all students, because not anyone has time to check notifications frequency. It was nothing special and we didn’t pay close attention and prepared for practice. Besides, the internship should be longer than one month so that students can practice more skills which they have been studying at university into real life, also have more time to face with difficult situation.

Finally, students should find the place where they are going to get an internship about 1-2 months before your internship begin in advance so that students can gain a better understanding of that place, it can help you to write your report faster. In addition, students should write the diary from the beginning of your internship because it may be helpful to complete your internship report on time.

I hope these recommendations can help to improve and make the teaching and learning quality better. I hope my suggestions are useful to future students who are going to do this course.
